| ABOUT EWS: ENVIRONMENT |
| Care for the environment is one of EWS's
key responsibilities and an important part
of how the company performs its business operations.
Rail freight has a proven environmental track
record when compared to other modes of transport
and EWS intends to continually improve that
record. |
| EWS aims to: |
- Comply with all relevant environmental
legislation and standards and aspire to
good business practice.
- Minimise the adverse effects of its
operations on the environment and its
neighbours.
- Monitor its environmental performance.
- Make environmental issues a part of
its decision making process.
|
| The EWS Board regularly reviews and monitors
EWS environmental performance; it endorses
the environmental policy statement and is
fully committed to its implementation. |
| In addition, EWS has invested in modern
locomotives that have set new standards in
environmental performance. The new class 66
and class 67 locomotives owned by EWS are
quieter, more fuel-efficient and have lower
emissions than older locomotives. |
| Emissions |
| Every tonne of freight carried by rail eases
congestion on the road network while reducing
emissions and fossil fuel consumption. |
| When compared with modern lorries, rail
freight typically uses a quarter of the fuel
while producing:: |
- Less than one quarter the carbon dioxide
- One third the nitrous oxide
- Half the volatile organic compounds
- Less than two thirds the carbon monoxide
|
| These environmental benefits underline the
importance of continued growth in rail freight. |
